The capital of Kurgan Oblast in central Russia. It is located on the high left bank of the Tobol River, a tributary of the Ob River. It has a population of 367,200 (1999). It is a railway junction. Its industries include machinery manufacturing (farm machinery, tractors, buses, chemical equipment, road machinery, wood processing machinery, machine tools), chemicals (pharmaceuticals), food products (meat, flour, dairy), and light industry (leather, hosiery, sewing, footwear). It is also a cultural center, with a number of universities, a theater, and a museum. There have been various theories about when the village was founded, but in recent years it is believed to have originated from the fortified village of Tsaryovo-Galadishche, which was built around 1662. It was later moved a little downstream along the Tobol River to its current location, and became the city of Kurgan in 1782.
