A novel written by Nomura Kodo. Published in All Yomimono and other publications from 1931 to 1957 (Showa 6-32). A total of 383 stories, including 21 full-length stories, 18 medium-length stories, 341 short stories, and 3 miniatures. The story revolves around three characters who live in a tenement house below Kanda Shrine - Heiji, a police inspector who is an expert at tipping money, his wife Oshizu, and his subordinate Garahachi, or Yagoro - and they solve a succession of difficult cases. The story is set during the time of the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, but the lifestyle and customs are set in the late Edo period. It is said that Heiji's tipping is inspired by the novel Suikoden. The three always stand on the side of the common people and oppose the evils of power and money.

野村胡堂作の小説。1931‐57年(昭和6‐32)《オール読物》などに発表。長編21，中編18，短編341，掌編3，計383編。神田明神下の長屋に住む，投げ銭の名人岡っ引平次，その妻お静，子分のガラっ八こと八五郎の3人を中心に，次々に起きる難事件を解決していく。時代は3代将軍徳川家光のころだが，生活風俗は幕末期に設定されている。平次の投げ銭は《水滸伝（すいこでん）》から着想されたといわれる。彼ら3人は常に庶民の側に立って権力･金権の悪をこらす。
