Nguyen Van Thieu (English)

South Vietnamese soldier and politician. In Japan, he is called Nguyen Van Thieu. He was born in Ninh Thuan, Central Vietnam. He started out as an army officer, but rose to prominence in 1963 when he participated in the coup against Ngo Dinh Diem, and became president in 1967. He then opposed North Vietnam and the National Liberation Front with the support of the United States, and ousted Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky and other opposition forces. He was re-elected president in 1971 and established a dictatorship. However, after the signing of the Paris Agreement in 1973, he lost the military backing of the United States, and faced the rise of the anti-government movement in 1974.

南ベトナムの軍人，政治家。日本ではグエン･バン･チューとも呼ぶ。中部ベトナムのニントゥアン出身。もともと陸軍将校であったが，1963年のゴ･ディン･ジェムに対するクーデタに参画して頭角を現し，67年に大統領となった。以降アメリカの支援を受けて北ベトナム，解放戦線に対抗すると共に，グエン･カオ･キ副大統領らの反対勢力を失脚させて，71年には大統領に再選され，独裁体制を確立した。しかし73年のパリ協定締結以降アメリカの軍事的後ろ楯を失い，74年には反体制運動の盛上りに直面した。
