Nagaoka Domain

The Fudai Domain had a castle in Nagaoka, Echigo Province (Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture) and ruled the surrounding area. In the late Edo period, three lords were appointed as senior councilors. Sadanari, ancestor of the Makino clan, became the lord of Ushikubo Castle in Mikawa in 1529 (Kyoroku 2) and belonged to Imagawa Yoshimoto, but under his eldest son Narisada, he became a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1590 (Tensho 18), when Ieyasu entered the Kanto region, Narisada's son Yasunari (one of the Tokugawa 17 generals) was granted a fief of 20,000 koku in Ogo, Kozuke Province (Ogo-cho, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture). In 1616 (Genwa 2), the year after the Summer Siege of Osaka, Yasunari's eldest son, Tadanari, was transferred to Nagamine, Kubiki County, Echigo (present Yoshikawa Ward, Joetsu City) with a fief of 50,000 koku. During construction of his castle, he was transferred again to Nagaoka with a fief of 64,000 koku in 1618. His fief extended to Koshi, Mishima, and Kambara counties. When Fukushima Masanori was abolished in 1619, his wife was the younger sister of Tadanari, who was adopted by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and so in 1620, he was granted an additional 10,000 koku in Tochio-go as support for his wife and children, which eventually grew to over 74,000 koku including the developed land.

After 46 years of establishment by the first lord Tadanari, the third lord Tadatoki's 48-year reign saw the establishment of a domain system. The ninth lord Tadakiyo succeeded to the title at the age of seven, and later joined the shogunate, serving as temple and shrine magistrate and Kyoto shoshidai. He was appointed as a senior councilor twice, mainly during the Kasei period (1804-1830), and was also skilled in the arts and sciences. Tadakiyo's fourth son Tadamasa succeeded him as the tenth lord, and signed the treaty as the second senior councilor when Perry arrived in Japan (1853). During his reign, Niigata-machi, the domain's treasure trove, was ceded to the shogun. The eleventh lord Tadayuki was in charge of foreign affairs as a senior councilor in 1863 (Bunkyu 3), but resigned at the urging of official Kawai Tsuginosuke. His successor, Tadakuni, sought to unite the Imperial Court and the Shogunate during the Boshin War and tried to maintain neutrality, but failed, and Nagaoka Castle fell. After the castle grounds were confiscated, the domain was restored with a stipend of 24,000 koku, but was abolished in 1871 (Meiji 4). After passing through Kashiwazaki Prefecture, it was incorporated into Niigata Prefecture in November of the same year.
