...For Kodaly, a nationalist who resisted the political and cultural oppression under the Hungarian-Austrian Empire at the time, Hungarian folk songs in particular were a basis for national unity and a direct source of material for his compositions. In terms of performance, the Hungarian violin school centered around Hubay was born, from which famous violinists such as Szigeti, Székely Zoltán (1903-), and Végh Sándor (1912-), as well as world-famous string quartets such as the Budapest String Quartet and the Hungarian String Quartet, were born. The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra was also founded in 1853.
