Jinbo Kaku

Born: April 18, 1883 in Tokyo
[Died] December 6, 1965. Tokyo Linguist and phonetician. Graduated from the Department of Linguistics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1908. Immediately became a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School. Later became a professor at Tokyo University of Literature and Science, retiring in 1945. Became a professor emeritus at Tokyo University of Education, and later a professor at Toyo University. In 1959, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. He made a great contribution to the establishment of Japanese phonetics, including accent. In the field of linguistic theory, he put forward many excellent and original ideas, such as concepts equivalent to Saussure's langue and synchronic voice, and always expressed them in simple language. He also worked to provide practical guidance through broadcasts and records, and was a great force in the spread of standard Japanese. His main works include An Introduction to Linguistics (1922), National Language Phonetics (25), National Language Phonetics Outline (47), and Gengo Theorie (61). His other works include a translation of O. Jespersen's "Language" (1927, co-translated with Ichikawa Miki) and the "Dictionary of Japanese Pronunciation and Accent" (32, co-authored with Tsunemi Chisato).

言語学者，音声学者。 1908年東京帝国大学言語学科卒業。ただちに東京高等師範学校教授。のち東京文理科大学教授となり 45年定年退官。東京教育大学名誉教授。のち東洋大学教授。 59年紫綬褒章を受ける。アクセントを含む日本音声学の確立に大きく貢献。言語理論の面でもソシュールのラングや共時態に相当する概念など数々のすぐれた独創的な考えを打出し，常に平易な言葉で表現した。また，放送やレコードを通して実践指導にも努め，標準語の普及に大きな力となった。主著『言語学概論』 (1922) ，『国語音声学』 (25) ，『国語音声学綱要』 (47) ，『言語理論』 (61) など。ほかに O.イェスペルセン『言語』の翻訳 (1927，市河三喜と共訳) ，『国語発音アクセント辞典』 (32，常深千里と共著) などもある。
