Kirke

Kirke

A witch in Greek mythology. She is also considered a goddess or a nymph. She is the daughter of the sun god Helios and Perse (or Perseis), the daughter of Oceanus. According to Homer, she lived on the legendary island of Aeaea (later believed to be Cape Circei near Latium), where her home was surrounded by men who had been transformed into beasts by magic. When Odysseus was shipwrecked there, his men who were sent out on a quest were turned into pigs, but he himself was able to avoid the magic and return his men to their original forms thanks to her herbs given to him by the god Hermes. He stayed on the island for a year and lived with Circe, giving birth to one son, Telegonus, but Hesiod says that they had two children, Agrius and Latinus. In the story of the Argo, Circe is said to have purified her niece Medea, who had murdered Jason's brother, Apsyrus, when she came to the island with Jason.
