Nikolai Pavlovich Ignatiev

Russian diplomat, politician, and count. Born into a politician's family, he worked as a diplomat from 1856. In 1859 he was appointed ambassador to China, and the following year he signed the Treaty of Beijing, which gave Russia the left bank of the Heilongjiang River and the area east of the Ussuri River. He served as ambassador to Turkey from 1864 to 1877. He prepared the Treaty of San Stefano, which was favorable to Russia, but after the Berlin Conference he withdrew from diplomatic life. He was Minister of the Interior from 1881 to 1882, and under Alexander III he suppressed the revolutionary movement and promoted reactionary policies.

ロシアの外交官，政治家，伯爵。政治家の子として生まれ，1856年より外交官として勤務。59年駐清国大使に任命され，翌年北京条約を締結。この条約により，黒竜江左岸およびウスリー川以東の地域はロシア領となった。64‐77年駐トルコ大使。サン･ステファノ条約の準備をしロシアに有利な条約を結んだが，ベルリン会議以後外交界から身を引いた。81‐82年内相に就任し，アレクサンドル3世の下で，革命運動を弾圧し，反動政策を推進した。
