Dorokyo - Dorokyo

Japanese:
Dorokyo - Dorokyo

This gorge is the Kitayama River, a tributary of the Kumano River that flows along the border between Wakayama and Mie prefectures. Toro means that the river appears to be still at a deep pool, and was originally written with the characters mud and cave. From downstream, it is divided into Shimo Toro, Kamidoro, and Oku Toro. The center of Toro Gorge is Shimo Toro, which stretches about 1 km from Tamaiguchi, Kumanogawa-cho, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, to Tado (Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture) upstream, and is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument as Toro Hachicho. This part is also the area where you can take a jet boat tour from Shiko, near the confluence with the Kumano River. The river meanders and intrudes through Mesozoic siliceous rocks, with cliffs of 20 to 50 meters on both sides, and one theory is that it was created when a waterfall basin retreated. The river is around 100 meters wide and 20 meters deep at its deepest point. It is lined with oddly shaped rocks, caves, and deep abysses, and is one of the most spectacular sights in Yoshino-Kumano National Park. Kamidoro stretches 2.1 kilometers upstream from Tato to Komatsu, where both banks are lower than Shimodoro and reefs appear on the riverbed, creating violent rapids. Okutoro stretches 20 kilometers upstream from Komatsu, and includes Nanairo Gorge, but it has been mostly submerged by the Komatsu and Nanairo Dams. Kamidoro has a tourist raft facility.
