A general term for vascular plants that do not have seeds, also known as seedless vascular plants. A group of polyphyletic vascular plants that remain at the spore plant stage and are not considered to be a systematic group. Ferns are generally referred to as true ferns, and other ferns include psilotum, lycopod, and horsetail (collectively known as fernallies). 維管束植物のうちで種子をもたないものの総称で,無種子維管束植物seedless vascular plantともいわれる。多系の維管束植物のうち,胞子植物段階にとどまっている群で,系統的なまとまりではないと考えられている。一般にシダ類といわれるものは真正シダ類fernで,シダ植物にはほかにマツバラン類psilotum,石松(せきしよう)類lycopod,トクサ類(有節類)horsetail(これらをひっくるめてfernalliesという)が含まれる。
