Shibana - Shibana

A perennial plant of the family Saccharaceae (APG classification: Saccharaceae). It is also called seaweed or broad-leaved misakisou, and can be boiled and eaten. The basal leaves are linear and somewhat fleshy, 10-40 cm long and 0.5-1 cm wide. From June to October, the inflorescences grow in racemes or spikes on flower stalks 10-30 cm high, and the yellow-green, bisexual flowers bloom, with the pistils maturing first. There are three inner and three outer perianth pieces, each 2.5 mm long and elliptical, with a blunt tip. There are six stamens and one pistil. The ovary is composed of six vesicular chambers, and becomes a capsule 3-5 mm long. When mature, it produces one or two oblong seeds, each about 2 mm long. It grows in coastal marshes, and is distributed in Honshu from the Chubu region westward. Marminoshibana T. maritima L. ( T. maritimum L.) grows wild in the Kanto region and north of Honshu, Hokkaido, and in the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Also called oshibana, it has narrow leaves and oval fruits.

シバナ科（APG分類：シバナ科）の多年草。ウミニラ、ヒロハノミサキソウともいい、ゆでて食べられる。根生葉は線形でやや多肉質、長さ10～40センチメートル、幅0.5～1センチメートル。6～10月、高さ10～30センチメートルの花茎に総状または穂状花序をなし、黄緑色で雌しべ先熟の両性花を開く。花被片(かひへん)は内外各3枚、長さ2.5ミリメートルの楕円(だえん)形で先は鈍くとがる。雄しべ6本、雌しべ1本。子房は胞形の6室からなり、長さ3～5ミリメートルの袋果となる。成熟すると、長楕円形で長さ約2ミリメートルの種子が1、2個できる。海浜の湿地に生え、中部地方以西の本州に分布する。関東地方以北の本州、北海道、および北半球の温帯にはマルミノシバナT. maritima L.（T. maritimum L.）が自生する。オオシバナともいい、葉幅が狭く、果実は楕円形である。
