A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher (illustration). Total length is about 13 cm. Sexes are the same color. The upper part of the body is yellowish brown with black vertical stripes, and the underside is pale colored. The tail is wedge-shaped with a white tip and spreads out like a fan. In spring and summer, it becomes slightly darker overall. It is widely distributed in southeastern Asia, northern Australia, southern Europe, and most of Africa, and in Japan it lives in various parts of the country except Hokkaido. Those in northern Japan migrate to warmer regions in winter. It mainly lives in dry grasslands, reed beds on riverbeds, and rice fields. スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約13cm。雌雄同色。体上面は黄褐色で黒色の縦斑があり,下面は淡色。尾は先端が白く,くさび形をしていて扇状に広げる。春・夏季には全体にやや黒っぽくなる。アジア東南部,オーストラリア北部,南ヨーロッパ,アフリカの大部分に広く分布し,日本では北海道を除く各地に生息する。北日本のものは冬季温暖な地方に移動する。おもに乾燥した草原や河川敷のヨシ原や水田にすむ。繁殖期になると雄はヒッヒッヒッと鳴きながら上昇し,次いでチャチャッチャチャッと鳴きながら舞い降りる。
