A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher (illustration). Total length is about 13 cm. Sexes are the same color. The upper part of the body is yellowish brown with black vertical stripes, and the underside is pale colored. The tail is wedge-shaped with a white tip and spreads out like a fan. In spring and summer, it becomes slightly darker overall. It is widely distributed in southeastern Asia, northern Australia, southern Europe, and most of Africa, and in Japan it lives in various parts of the country except Hokkaido. Those in northern Japan migrate to warmer regions in winter. It mainly lives in dry grasslands, reed beds on riverbeds, and rice fields. During the breeding season, males rise up while chirping "hihihi" and then descend while chirping "cha-cha-cha-cha."
