A general term for insects of the Hyblaeidae family of the Lepidoptera order. There are about 30 species, mainly found in tropical regions. All are active during the day and are named after the skipper butterfly because at first glance they resemble one. The Japanese skipper butterfly, Hyblaea fortissima , is endemic to the temperate zones of Japan and flies in the early spring in sunny areas along mountain streams. Its wingspan is about 3cm. Its forewings are dark gray with a slight yellowish gray tinge and are densely covered with dark spots. The larvae feed on the Japanese bark bean, and in June they build hideouts by piling up leaves and live inside. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
