On August 1, 1291, representatives of the three original Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden agreed to cooperate in self-defense and to protect their freedom against external oppressors. This became the basis of the current Swiss Confederation. When Rudolf I of the Habsburg family was elected King of Germany, he used his position to expand the Habsburg family's territory and expand his influence in Switzerland, but the three cantons resisted this move, and when his oppressive son Albrecht succeeded him after the king's death, the three cantons immediately formed the Perpetual League and supported the anti-Habsburg king candidate.
