Year of death: 1712 Year of birth: Kan'ei 10? (1633) A kettle maker in the mid-Edo period. For generations, the Miyazaki family had been engaged in the foundry business in Nakai Village, Noto Province (Hōji County, Ishikawa Prefecture), but in the Tenshō era (1573-92), he moved to Kanazawa to serve the Maeda family. His childhood name was Giichi, and he was commonly known as Hikokuro. He later shaved his head and took the name Tokuo. He went to Kyoto and learned kettle making from Onishi Jōsei, and was summoned by Maeda Toshitsune, the lord of Kaga Domain, to build Komatsu Castle, where he returned to Kanazawa and became a kettle maker for the government. His style was sandy, inherited from his master Jōsei, and many of his works were thin and clean, including the Kashiwaba kettle, Otogozen kettle, and Daikōdō kettle. In addition to kettles, he also made many Buddhist altar implements, and examples of his works, such as bronze bells and three-piece utensil set with inscriptions dating from around 1667 to 1681, are preserved in temples around Kanazawa City. Since the first Kanchi had no sons, the youngest grandson of Yojiro Tsuji was adopted and succeeded him as the second Kanchi, and the name of Kanchi has been passed down to the present day.
