A siliceous complex consisting of one or more of opal, chalcedony, and microcrystalline quartz. It occurs as concretions, nodules, or layers. According to Tarr, flint is synonymous with chert, and Tarr recommends that the term should be restricted to the processed form [Tar: 1938]. In England, however, the term is widely used, especially for black, brown, or grey siliceous nodules found in the Cenomanian chalk. They contain sponge fragments, foraminifera, shell fragments, and occasionally sea urchins or inoceramids. Flint nodules are generally of the chalky, old colour of porous silica, and when broken show shell-like fractures [Pettijohn: 1975]. The origin of the name flint is unclear, but it is probably due to the Old English word flyht, meaning flight, and its use in attaching arrowheads. Old names included flystan and flynt [Tomkeieff: 1983]. Source: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Petrology Information |
