... In Arabic, this flute is also called qaṣaba, ghaṣba, or quṣṣāba, but these names also mean "reed" in Arabic. The short ney used in folk music is sometimes called shabbāba in Arabic. The Chinese dongxiao (xiao) is said to have originally been introduced from the Western Regions, but it is thought to have a common ancestor with today's ney in West Asia.
