An extinct volcano located in central Kenya, East Africa, directly on the equator. At 5,199m above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in Africa. The area above 3,300m is a national park. There is a glacier from the summit to 4,300m. The starting point for climbing is Nanyuki in the northwest. HJ Mackinder was the first to reach the summit in 1899. The national park and natural forest were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
