…The following year, he moved to the University of Berlin and studied comparative musicology under C. Stumpf, which was just beginning to flourish at the time. In the autumn of that year, he recorded the music of the Kawakami Otojiro and Sadayakko troupe during their Berlin performance, and also interviewed them. In 1903, he published “A Study on the Sound Structure and Music of the Japanese” with his colleague Otto Abraham (1872-1926), marking his debut in the musicology world. From 1917 until he was pursued by the Nazis in 1933, he taught comparative musicology at the University of Berlin, educating such brilliant scholars as G. Herzog, HRH Hickman, M. Kolinski, and W. Viola, and indirectly contributed to the formation of this field in America. …

Together with his collaborator Otto Abraham (1872-1926), he transcribed recorded melodies from different cultures and attempted to elucidate their sound structures.
