Vignola, Giacomo Barozzi da
Born: October 1, 1507, Vignola
Died July 7, 1573. Rome. A representative architect of Italian Mannerism. He is thought to have first studied under B. Bascellotti in Bologna, where one of his early works, Palazzo di Banchi, is located. He began to work in earnest after moving to Rome in 1554, first demonstrating his talent in the Villa Giulia (in collaboration with G. Vasari and B. Ammannati), which was started in 1552 as a villa for Pope Julius III. He also designed the Basilica of Sant'Andrea in Via Flaminia, among others. However, his most famous works are the Villa Farnese in Caprarola (involved from around 1556) and the Basilica of Il Gesu in Rome (68-84, interior design, facade designed by G. Porta). The former, with its ingenious construction of the great staircase at the front and its architectural composition that makes use of the existing pentagonal plan, is one of the representative villas of this period, while the latter, inheriting L. Alberti's concept and developing it further, has succeeded in creating a unified spatial composition. He is also known as the author of "Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura" (Rules on the Five Orders of Architecture) (62) and "Le due regole della prospettiva practica" (Two Rules for Practical Perspective) (83).
