A port city in South Carolina, USA. An important port of entry on the Atlantic coast. Settled on the west bank of the Ashley River in 1670, it is the oldest city in the state. During the colonial period, it was a center of trade with the West Indies, and since the end of the 18th century, it prospered as a winter port for the United States through Caribbean trade. The population is diverse, with many immigrants from Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, and other countries, as well as Jews and many descendants of African slaves. There are factories manufacturing petroleum, paper, pulp, chemical fertilizer, metallurgy, tobacco, and clothing. The chemical fertilizer industry has long been an important industry in the city. It is home to the University of Charleston (founded in 1770), the Medical University of South Carolina (founded in 1823), the Charleston Museum, H. Washington's House, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Gardens such as White Point, Middleton Place, and Magnolia are famous. It suffered major damage from the 1989 hurricane. Population: 120,083 (2010).

A dance performed to a variation of 1920s jazz, known as two-beat jazz, or the name given to the rhythm. It is said to have first been danced to by Cecil Mack and Jenny Johnston in 1923 in the all-black revue "Runnin' Wild." It is said to have been named after the song played at the time, "Charleston, South Carolina," composed by James P. Johnson. It soon became popular as a social dance, and by 1927 had become a worldwide trend. The basic form involves keeping both knees together and kicking up one leg at a time, alternating between the left and right, in time with the rhythm. It became popular again in the late 1950s, and was used on stage and in films.

The capital of the state of West Virginia, USA. It is located at the confluence of the Kanawha River and the Elk River, tributaries of the Ohio River, at an elevation of 180m. The city was named after Charles Clendenin, who settled in 1788 and built Fort Lee. It was incorporated in 1870 and has been the state capital ever since, except for when it was ceded to Wheeling from 1875 to 1885. It is located on the migration route to the Ohio Valley, making it a transfer and transportation center. In the 20th century, the population increased rapidly due to the rapid industrialization of the Kanawha Valley. Coal, chemical, and textile industries are located here, and glass product manufacturing is also thriving. Charleston Airport is the state's main airport. Morris-Harvey University and West Virginia State College are located here. Population 57,287 (1990).

1920年代のジャズ，いわゆるツー・ビート・ジャズの変形の演奏で踊る踊り，またはそのリズムに対する名称。セシル・マックとジェニー・ジョンストンが 1923年，黒人ばかりのレビュー"Runnin' Wild"のなかで踊ったのが最初とされる。そのときの曲が，ジェームス・P.ジョンソンの作曲した"charleston，south carolina"であったところからこの名がついたといわれる。やがて社交ダンスとして広まり，27年頃までには世界的な流行となった。リズムに合せて両膝を付けたまま，足を左右交互にはね上げる形が基本。 50年代後半に再び流行し，舞台や映画に使われた。

アメリカ合衆国，ウェストバージニア州の州都。オハイオ川の支流カノーア川とエルク川の合流点，標高 180mに位置する。市の名は 1788年入植してリー砦を建設したチャールズ・クレンデニンにちなむ。 1870年市制，以来 75～85年にホイーリングに譲った以外は州都。オハイオ谷への移住ルートに位置するため，乗換え，輸送の中心地。 20世紀にカノーア谷の急速な工業化により人口急増。石炭，化学，繊維工業が立地し，ガラス製品の製造も盛ん。チャールストン空港は州の主要空港。モリスハーベイ大学，ウェストバージニア州立単科大学がある。人口5万 7287 (1990) 。
