A port city in South Carolina, USA. An important port of entry on the Atlantic coast. Settled on the west bank of the Ashley River in 1670, it is the oldest city in the state. During the colonial period, it was a center of trade with the West Indies, and since the end of the 18th century, it prospered as a winter port for the United States through Caribbean trade. The population is diverse, with many immigrants from Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, and other countries, as well as Jews and many descendants of African slaves. There are factories manufacturing petroleum, paper, pulp, chemical fertilizer, metallurgy, tobacco, and clothing. The chemical fertilizer industry has long been an important industry in the city. It is home to the University of Charleston (founded in 1770), the Medical University of South Carolina (founded in 1823), the Charleston Museum, H. Washington's House, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Gardens such as White Point, Middleton Place, and Magnolia are famous. It suffered major damage from the 1989 hurricane.
