Paasikivi, Juho Kusti
Born: November 27, 1870, Tambere
Died December 14, 1956, Helsinki. Finnish politician. Studied law and history at the universities of Uppsala and Leipzig, and became a lecturer at the University of Helsinki in 1902. After a career in business, he entered politics in 1908, and after Finland gained independence, he served as the chief plenipotentiary at the peace conference with the Soviet Union in 1920. In the autumn of 1939, he tried to reach a peaceful resolution to the Soviet territorial claims, but failed. During the Winter War (1939-40), he promoted an early peace with the Soviet Union, and during World War II, he was involved in the conclusion of the armistice agreement with the Soviet Union (44). As prime minister from 1944 to 1946 and president from 1946 to 1956, he devoted himself to stabilizing relations with the Soviet Union.
