A city in the northeastern part of Andhra Pradesh, southeastern India. Population 702,000 (1991). It is located on the eastern bank of the alluvial fan where the Krishna River leaves the Eastern Ghats and develops into an alluvial delta. The city distributes rice and tobacco from the surrounding areas. It is also home to various industries such as rice milling, oil refining, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals, but is particularly famous as a producer of traditional handmade paper. It flourished as a major city of the Eastern Chalukya dynasty from the first half of the 7th century to the 10th century. インド南東部,アーンドラ・プラデーシュ州北東部の都市。人口70万2000(1991)。クリシュナー川が東ガーツ山脈を離れ,扇状地性のデルタを展開する扇頂部東岸に位置する。周辺からの米,タバコを集散する。精米,製油,タバコ,薬品などの諸工業も立地するが,とくに伝統的な手すき紙の特産地として名高い。7世紀前半から10世紀にかけて東チャールキヤ朝の主要都市として栄えた。周辺一帯は古くから開け,仏教遺跡が多く残る。
