Princess Inoue - Princess Inoue

Japanese:
Princess Inoue - Princess Inoue
Year of death: 27 April 775 (30 May 775)
Year of birth: Yoro 1 (717)
A deposed empress in the Nara period. Daughter of Emperor Shomu and his wife, Inukai Hirotoji. Empress of Emperor Kōnin. Also known as "Ikami." In 721, she was appointed by divination as the Saiō of Ise. Later, she became the wife of Prince Shirakabe (Kōnin) and became empress when the king ascended to the throne in 770, but in 770, she was deposed for high treason by a curse of a shaman or enmei. Her son, Prince Tato, was also deposed as crown prince. After being imprisoned, they both died on the same day in 770. The Hyakukawaden section of "Kugyō Bunin" suggests that Fujiwara Hyakukawa was behind the scenes working for Prince Yamabe (Emperor Kanmu), and it seems that they were poisoned. The "Suikyō" contains a mix of fact and fiction about the incident. She seemed to have survived by skillfully avoiding the fierce political struggles surrounding the throne, such as the death of her younger brother Prince Asaka (possibly poisoned) and the tragic ups and downs of her younger sister Princess Fuwa, but in the end she was placed in the glorious position of being responsible for the transition of the imperial line from the Tenmu line to the Tenchi line, and it was for this very reason that she suffered this tragedy. Perhaps due to fear of her vengeful spirit, she was restored to the throne after her death and was called Empress Dowager Yoshino. <References> Tsunoda Fumiei, "The Dethronement and Dethronement Incident in the Third Year of the Hoki Era" (Tsunoda Fumiei Collected Works, Volume 3)
