Mangano, S.

...His Italian name is actually De Laurentiis. He was one of the producers who supported Neorealism, and he nurtured the actress Silvana Mangano (1930-89), and became known internationally as the "King of Italian Film." He later moved to the American film industry and produced many major works. After graduating from Rome's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematographia (Experimental Film Center) and serving in the military during World War II, he produced Bitter Rice (1948), directed by Giuseppe De Santis, which added eroticism to Neorealism, and became an international hit, promoting the heroine, the "muscular actress" Silvana Mangano (who he married in 1949).
