[Genealogy of Western concepts of space]
In the ancient Greek cultural sphere, noteworthy theories of space can be found in Democritus, Plato, and Aristotle. In Democritus, space was seen as a complete emptiness (mēon) (i.e., the negation of all existence), and it was also seen as a space for atoms (atoms) to move as entities. In ancient Greece, this concept of space as the negation of existence was extremely rare, and in fact both Plato and Aristotle did not hide their strong antipathy towards Democritus.
