A full-length novel by Mori Ogai. It was serialized in Subaru from March 1910 to August the following year. Junichi Koizumi, a beautiful young man who wants to be a writer, comes to Tokyo from Y Prefecture. He first visits the writer Oishi Roka, but is not satisfied. He then listens to a lecture by the writer Hirata Fuseki, and while he is attracted to her, he is not satisfied. He is then given a lecture by the medical student Omura Shonosuke, and comes to understand. Meanwhile, he happens to meet the widow of a doctor of law, Sakai, at a theater, and ends up having a sexual relationship with her. After this experience of being disillusioned by the relationship, he decides to write a work that modernizes an ancient legend. It is a rare philosophical novel for its time, dealing with the mental growth of a contemporary intellectual youth, while keeping in mind Natsume Soseki's Sanshiro. However, it lacks some depth as a novel. [Hideo Isogai] "Youth" (Iwanami Bunko) Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
