Youth - Seinen

A full-length novel by Mori Ogai. It was serialized in Subaru from March 1910 to August the following year. Junichi Koizumi, a beautiful young man who wants to be a writer, comes to Tokyo from Y Prefecture. He first visits the writer Oishi Roka, but is not satisfied. He then listens to a lecture by the writer Hirata Fuseki, and while he is attracted to her, he is not satisfied. He is then given a lecture by the medical student Omura Shonosuke, and comes to understand. Meanwhile, he happens to meet the widow of a doctor of law, Sakai, at a theater, and ends up having a sexual relationship with her. After this experience of being disillusioned by the relationship, he decides to write a work that modernizes an ancient legend. It is a rare philosophical novel for its time, dealing with the mental growth of a contemporary intellectual youth, while keeping in mind Natsume Soseki's Sanshiro. However, it lacks some depth as a novel.

森鴎外(おうがい)の長編小説。1910年（明治43）3月から翌年8月まで『昴(スバル)』に連載。Y県から上京した作家希望の美青年小泉純一は、まず、作家大石路花(ろか)を訪ねて満足せず、ついで、作家平田拊石(ふせき)の講演を聞いて、心をひかれつつも釈然としないところを、医大生大村荘之助(しょうのすけ)の講釈によって自得する。一方、たまたま観劇の場で知り合った坂井法学博士の未亡人と肉体関係をもつに至り、それに幻滅するという体験を経て、古伝説を現代化した作品を書こうと思い立つ。夏目漱石(そうせき)の『三四郎』を意識しつつ、当代の知識青年の心的成長を扱った作品で、当時としては珍しい思想小説である。ただし、小説としての膨らみには欠けるところがある。
