General Maritime Company (English)

Japanese: ジェネラル･マリティーム[会社]（英語表記）Compagnie Générale Maritime

A liner company representing French shipping. Its history dates back to Société des Services Maritimes des Messageries Nationales, which was founded in 1851 as a mail ship operator (renamed Société des Services Maritimes des Messageries Nationales in 1871). Initially it was limited to managing regular mail routes between the Mediterranean and Africa, but in the 1860s it expanded into the Orient, opening a Yokohama-Shanghai route in 1865.

フランス海運を代表する定期船会社。その歴史は1851年に郵便船の運航会社として創設されたセルビス･マリティーム･デ･メサジュリー･ナシオナル会社Société des Services Maritimes des Messageries Nationalesにさかのぼる(1871年メサジュリー･マリティーム会社と改称)。当初は地中海とアフリカ地域の郵便定期航路の経営にとどまっていたが，1860年代に東洋に進出し，65年には横浜～上海航路を開設した。
