The number of participating cities increased, and at its peak in the 5th century BCE, Greek colonies in southern Italy, Sicily, Asia Minor, North Africa, and the Black Sea coast all sent athletes, and the Olympic Games literally acquired a symbolic significance of Greek national pride and unity. Before and after the festival, cities in conflict temporarily ceased fighting and allowed the enemy athletes to pass through the country, based on an agreement called the Ekecheiria (sacred truce).
