A political group that advocated constitutional reform in the late Qing Dynasty of China. Infuriated by the defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895 and the signing of the Treaty of Xiaguan by Li Hongzhang, Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao and others established the Qiang Society in Beijing and a branch in Shanghai, and launched a reform movement that included translating books from Eastern and Western countries, publishing newspapers and magazines, and opening a political school. The reactionaries of the Qing Dynasty were shocked by this situation and quickly closed the Qiang Society, but its influence spread to each province and promoted the constitutional reform movement.
