...However, immediately after the promulgation of the Federalism Abolition Act in May of that year, a large number of Igbo people living in the Northern State were killed, and Ironsi was killed on July 29th. This second coup brought Lt. Colonel Gowon (1934- ) into power, and the federal system was restored. However, at the end of September, massacres of Igbo people began again in the Northern State, and more than one million Igbo people returned to their homeland in the Eastern State, rapidly escalating the conflict between the Eastern State, the Northern State, and the federal government.
