It refers to work that is extremely repetitive in nature. The monotony of work can be objectively measured to some extent by the time allotted for the completion of a task (job cycle). The shorter the job cycle, the more times the same task is repeated within a given working hour. Typical examples of monotonous work are assembly, inspection, packaging, and other jobs in mass production factories for automobiles, electrical appliances, precision machinery, clothing, miscellaneous goods, and food, but it can also be found widely in workplaces where single-skill machines are operated and in mechanized offices where information is processed at high speed.
