Obi Festival

Japanese: 帯祭 - おびまつり
Obi Festival

This is the grand festival of Oi Shrine in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is held for three days in mid-October every three years in the years of the Tiger, Snake, Monkey and Pig. It is considered one of Japan's three strangest festivals, along with the fire festival in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture, and the naked festival in Konomiya, Aichi Prefecture. Women who marry into the Shimada inn offer their obi belts to Oi Shrine as a prayer for safe childbirth. On the final day, the shrine holds a feudal lord procession, and to show off the obi belts, the belts are used to hang the swords of the 25 oyakko (maids) who accompany the mikoshi (portable shrine). They walk quietly with their obi belts hanging long.

Obi Festival
The Oi Shrine Grand Festival (Shimada Festival) is held once every three years in mid-October in the years of the Tiger, Snake, Monkey, and Pig. It is said to have started around the Genroku period, and originated from the custom of brides showing off their obi to the people of the town. 25 Oyakko (major servants) who accompany the feudal lord's procession parade around with beautiful obi hanging from large swords on either side. It is counted as one of Japan's three most unusual festivals. Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture © Shizuoka Prefecture Tourism Association ">
