A master of Spanish painting in the 17th century. Born in Fuente de Cantos, Badajoz, he died in Madrid. Appointed painter for the city of Seville in 1629, he spent most of his life working in the Andalusian capital, producing numerous religious paintings, especially those about the history of religious orders, the lives of monks and saints, ascetics and mystics, mainly for religious orders. His tranquil religious paintings, characterized by their familiar composition, unadorned realism, clear contours and dense surface expression of volume, bright colors and golden colors that permeate the entire picture plane, and chiaroscuro, beautifully reflect the spirit of the Counter-Reformation movement that dominated Spain at the time, especially its spirit of mysticism and self-restraint. He also produced a few original "bodegone" (still lifes) and portraits. His representative works include "The Praise of St. Thomas Aquinas" (1631), the Guadalupe Monastery series (1638-39), and the Carthusian Monastery of Jerusalem series (ibid.).
