Surunai

Japanese: スルナイ
Surunai
A wind instrument of the oboe family. It is widely distributed throughout the areas where Islamic power extended and its sphere of influence, mainly in Western Asia, North Africa, the Mediterranean region of Europe, and eastward to India, Southeast Asia, and China. It has a conical wooden tube with a double reed attached, and most of them basically have the same structure with seven holes in the front and one in the back, but there are subtle differences in name, size, material, etc. depending on the cultural area. In early modern Persian (Iran), it is called sorunā. In Turkey, it is called zurna, and in North India, it is called shānai. Some names are derived from Persian, such as the Indonesian surnai and the Chinese suonā, while others are far removed from Persian, such as the Tibetan gyān and the Thai pi. In Arabic, it has been called mizmar since ancient times. In today's Egypt, large ones are called mizmar baladi, and small ones are called sūibs. In Greece, in addition to the Turkish name zurna, it is also called karamza and pipizha.
