The name of this dynasty arose from the fact that the first king, Muḥammad b.Ṭughj (ruled 935-946), was given the title of Ikhshid, a local ruler in pre-Islamic northeastern Iran, by the Abbasid caliph Rādī (ruled 934-940). Muhammad put an end to political turmoil in Egypt and also gained control of Syria, where he came into conflict with the Hamdanid dynasty based in Mosul.
