A former town in Aira County in northern Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the hills around the Kinzan River at the western foot of the Kirishima volcano. The main settlement, which is on the Hisatsu Line, developed as a post town on the highway between Kagoshima and Hitoyoshi. The Kyushu Expressway passes through the town. Cucumbers, watermelons, and other produce are produced here, and tea and Japanese beef breeding are thriving, and the town is also attracting businesses. In November 2005, the town merged with Kokubu City, Aira County's Mizobe Town, Makizono Town, Kirishima Town, Hayato Town, and Fukuyama Town to become Kirishima City. 70.45 km2 .
