An Islamic kingdom formed in the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines. An Islamic community of foreign merchants had been established on Jolo Island, the center of the Sulu Archipelago, from around the end of the 13th century, but it was not until the mid-15th century that Islam spread to the island's indigenous people. Around this time, Abu Bakr, an Arab who came from Sumatra, converted the inhabitants of the island's interior as well, and established the sultanate over the entire island of Jolo. The control of the Jolo Sultanate eventually extended to the entire Sulu Archipelago. In 1645, the Sultanate intervened in a civil war in the Kingdom of Brunei in Borneo, and gained sovereignty over the northern part of the island.
