Many of the varieties for sericulture have been selected and cultivated from several wild species, but some, such as Ichibei M. argutidens Koidz., are thought to be hybrid varieties. Regarding the introduction of mulberry trees to Japan from overseas, it is said that mulberry seeds were brought in from the Tang Dynasty in 679, but the details are unclear.
