Kiguchi - Kiguchi

A marine fish belonging to the family Sciaenidae in the order Perciformes of the class Osteichthyes. It is also called Kingchi. It is found in the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. Its body is rather long and laterally compressed. Its body color is silvery white, with a golden belly. The largest can reach a total length of 35 cm. Its maximum age has been confirmed to be 11 years. Its growth rate is 13 cm in one year, 21 cm in two years, and 24 cm in three years, after which it plateaus. It is carnivorous, preying on crustaceans such as krill and small fish. It migrates vertically day and night in a cyclical manner, accompanying the movement of plankton and other prey organisms that live in the depths during the day and rise to the surface at night. It spawns from March to July. Large fish mature early, while small fish mature later. During the spawning season, large schools of fish flock to the coasts of the Korean Peninsula and China, and the squawking noises they make can be heard from the shore or on a boat. This species is the most common of the croakers caught in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea, accounting for the majority of the total catch, but in recent years its population has declined dramatically due to overfishing. It is also used for grilling with salt and frying in tempura, but is primarily used as an ingredient in high-quality kamaboko.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目ニベ科に属する海水魚。キングチともいう。東シナ海、黄海に分布する。体はやや長く、側扁(そくへん)する。体色は銀白色で、腹部は黄金色を帯びる。全長は大きいもので35センチメートル。年齢は最高11年が確認されている。成長は1年で13センチメートル、2年で21センチメートル、3年で24センチメートルとなり、以後は停滞する。食性は肉食で、オキアミなどの甲殻類、小形魚類などを捕食する。プランクトンなど餌(えさ)生物が、昼間は深層にいて夜間は表層に浮上する動きに伴って、昼夜の周期的垂直移動を行う。産卵期は3～7月。大形魚は早く成熟し、小形魚の成熟は遅れる。産卵期には朝鮮半島や中国の沿岸へ大群が押し寄せ、群れが発するガーガーという鳴音は海岸や船上からでもよく聞こえるという。本種は、東シナ海、黄海で漁獲されるニベ類のなかでもっとも多く、その大半を占めるが、近年は乱獲により激減。塩焼き、てんぷらなどにもされるが、主として良質のかまぼこの原料となる。
