Sulu [Islands] - Sulu

Sulu [Islands] - Sulu
The Sulu Islands are an archipelago of 958 islands scattered between Mindanao and North Borneo in the southwest of the Philippines. They are also called the Sulu Islands. Administratively, they are divided into three provinces, with a total population of 756,000 (1980). They cover an area of 4,014 km2 . The main islands are Jolo and Tawi-Tawi. Many of the islands are volcanic. The inhabitants are Muslim Tausug, Sama, Bajau, and others, collectively known as Moro. The area has traded with the Chinese and Malays since the 13th century, and is rich in pearl oysters and other marine products. Islam spread in the 14th century, and the Sulu Sultanate was formed in the 15th century. The Sulu Sultanate fought the Moro War against Spanish invasions from the 16th century onwards, and maintained its independence, but in 1915 it came under American rule, and in 1940 it was incorporated into the Philippines. After the Philippines gained independence, the Sulu Archipelago, along with Mindanao, became the base of the Moro National Liberation Movement (MNLF), and a separatist struggle unfolded. In 1990, the government granted autonomy to the archipelago, and peace talks have been held since, but Sulu remains the base of the MNLF's Misuari faction.
