The technique of creating patterns by gluing gold and silver foil to cloth. Suribaku is the opposite of gold-de-e, which is done by mixing gold and silver powder into an adhesive and applying it with a brush, or kirikane, which involves sticking thin strips of gold and silver foil onto paper. The technique involves using a stencil with a design cut into it, applying an adhesive medium (usually himenori), and while the stencil is still wet, placing the foil on it and pressing it lightly with soft cotton or similar, leaving it to dry, and then brushing off the excess foil. However, surihaku is generally rarely used on its own, and is often used partially in conjunction with embroidery, yuzen dyeing, etc. This is why it has names such as sewn foil. One example of a pattern made entirely from foil is the suribaku of Noh costumes. This is the costume worn by female actors in Noh plays, and for this reason the word suribaku is used to refer to this costume in Noh. In particular, the uroko foil with triangular seams used in plays such as "Dojoji" and "Lady Aoi" is known as a costume that symbolizes the woman's obsession transforming into a snake-bodied demon.
