Nanook of the North

...This first feature-length documentary film, which was described as "a charm of truth that makes feature films seem hollow," led Flaherty to be called "the father of documentary film." The film depicts the lifestyle and customs of the people living in the Canadian far north, shot on location, with an Eskimo man named Nanuk as the main character (also known as "Nanuk of the North" in the original title). As is clear from the fact that an igloo (ice house) is actually too small to be used for interior filming, and an extra-large igloo was built for the film, the entire film is not simply live action, but as Paul Rosa, author of "Documentary Film," analyzes, "the materials used for the film were taken from real life, and the choice of images to fully understand their existence made it a recorded 'reality.'"
