As a philosophical term, it is a translation of the Latin word “idola” (singular “idolum,” the origin of the English word “idol”), which means a figure or image. During the Renaissance, G. Bruno used this word to mean a preconception that makes it impossible to see the real thing, and then F. Bacon analyzed “idols that enslave the human intellect,” naming those that lie hidden in human nature because we are human beings “idola tribus” (idola of the race), preconceptions that individuals have “idola specus” (idola of the cave), prejudices that arise from social life “idola fori” (idola of the marketplace), and those that arise from academic theory “idola theatri” (idola of the theater), showing that it is difficult to recognize things as they are.
