Oswald von Wolkenstein

Oswald von Wolkenstein
1377?-1445
A poet and composer from the German-speaking world in the late Middle Ages. Born into a South Tyrolean noble family. He wrote around 125 works in manuscripts created during his lifetime. In addition to religious poetry (especially Marian hymns) and love poems, he also wrote satirical autobiographical poems. He left home at the age of 10, travelled throughout Europe, Turkey and Persia, and is said to have spoken 10 languages. His style of lyrics and composition is linked to the Minnesang tradition, but his style is by no means courtly. In recent years, he has been increasingly recognized as a person with a unique talent that transcends the constraints of the times. [Kishitani Hiroko]
