Awata clan

Japanese: 粟田氏 - あわたうじ
Awata clan
An ancient powerful clan. A relative of the Wani clan. According to the clan genealogy in the Kojiki, the founder was Emperor Kōshō's son, Amenooshitarashihiko. With the establishment of the eight-class surname system during the reign of Tenmu, the clan changed from omi to ason. They lived mainly in Soekami-gun (eastern Nara City) in Yamato, where the Wani clan and its relatives lived, and Awata-go, Atago-gun, Yamashiro (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City), where the Wani clan and its relatives lived, and Ono-jinja Shrine in Shiga-gun, Omi, was their tutelary deity in the early Heian period. They produced Dokan, known as a scholar who went to Tang China during the reign of Kōtoku, Chizō, known as a scholar who went to Tang China, and Awata Masato, who was active in the selection of the Taihō Code and as a Japanese envoy to Tang China during the reign of Emperor Bunkyō. Awata Moroe became the wife of Ōi no Omi (Emperor Junnin) after the death of her husband, Fujiwara no Masatsugu (the eldest son of Nakamaro).
