Sumo stable - Sumobeya

In sumo wrestling, there are sumo stables that are entrusted by the Japan Sumo Association to train wrestlers, and are managed by a stablemaster (oyakata). Wrestlers are members of the Sumo Association and belong to one of the stables. As a rule, wrestlers cannot transfer stables. In tournaments, wrestlers from the same stable do not compete against each other (a round-robin system is used by each stable). A group is made up of several stables, and the sumo world is currently divided into five groups. The groups originally originated from friends who toured the country together, and are linked by master-disciple relationships and main and branch family relationships. The current group structure was established in 1946, and includes the Dewa Group, which is centered around the Dewanoumi stable; the Tokitsukaze Group, which is made up of the Tokitsukaze and Isenoumi stables; the Takasago Group, which is centered around the Takasago stable; the Nishonoseki Group, which is centered around the Nishonoseki and Sadogatake stables; the Tatsunami-Isegahama Alliance (renamed the Tatsunami Group in 2007), which brings together the Tatsunami and Miyagino stables. They socialize at weddings, funerals, and other ceremonies, and also allocate votes as the selection body for directors and auditors in the election of the Sumo Association officials, which is held every two years.

大相撲には日本相撲協会が力士の育成を委託している相撲部屋があり、年寄(親方)が運営している。力士は相撲協会員であると同時に、いずれかの部屋の所属となる。原則として力士は、部屋の移籍はできない。本場所では同部屋力士同士の対戦はない(部屋別総当たり制)。部屋がいくつか集まって形成しているのが一門で、現在の角界は5系統に分かれている。一門はもともと、地方巡業を一緒に行っていた仲間が起源で、師弟関係や本家・分家関係で結び付いている。現在の一門に固定化したのは1946年で、出羽海部屋を中心とした出羽一門、時津風部屋と伊勢ノ海部屋などで形成している時津風一門、高砂部屋を中心とした高砂一門、二所ノ関部屋や佐渡ケ嶽部屋を中心とした二所ノ関一門、立浪部屋、宮城野部屋などが集まった立浪・伊勢ケ浜連合(2007年から立浪一門に改称)がある。冠婚葬祭での付き合いや、2年に一度改選される相撲協会の役員選挙では、理事・監事の選出母体として票の割り振りをする。
