Flavius ​​Aëtius

A general in the final days of the Western Roman Empire. Born into a Roman aristocratic family in Bulgaria, he was held hostage by the Visigoths and Huns at a young age. In 425, he was appointed military commander in Gaul, and for the next 30 years, he fought hard to protect Roman control over Gaul from invading foreign tribes, and under Emperor Valentinian III, he held real power in the empire, wearing the titles of patricius and consul. In 451, he repelled the invasion of the Huns under the command of Attila at the Battle of Catalaun with the help of the Visigoths and Franks. He was assassinated because he wanted his son Gaudentius to marry the emperor's daughter, which caused the resentment of the Roman aristocracy and the distrust of the emperor. After his death, the empire's control over Gaul rapidly weakened.

西ローマ帝国末期の将軍。ブルガリア地方のローマ系貴族の家に生まれ、若年のころ西ゴート人やフン人のもとに人質となった。425年ガリアの軍司令官に任ぜられ、以後約30年、侵入する異民族からガリアにおけるローマの支配権を守るべく奮戦、皇帝ウァレンティニアヌス3世のもとでパトリキウスやコンスルの称号を帯び、帝国の実権を握った。451年、アッティラ指揮下のフン人の侵入を、西ゴート人、フランク人などの援助によりカタラウヌムの戦いで撃退した。息子ガウデンティウスを皇帝の皇女と結婚させようと望んだため、ローマ貴族の反感と皇帝の不信を買い、暗殺された。彼の死後、帝国のガリア支配は急速に弱体化した。
