Sumata Gorge - Sumata Gorge

Japanese: 寸又峡 - すまたきょう

A gorge in Kawanehon-cho, Haibara-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture. The gorge is an incised meander formed by the meandering Sumata River, a tributary of the Oi River, carving out its course as it meanders, from the Sumata River Dam to the Oma Dam and Hiryu Bridge area. The flat surface of Oma, where Sumatakyo Onsen is located, is the old riverbed. The gorge has a long history of power development, with dams and power plants scattered along the Sumata River. Tourism has progressed as the hot spring water has been drawn away, and the area is included in Okuoi Prefectural Natural Park and has excellent forest scenery. Take the Oigawa Railway from JR Tokaido Main Line Kanaya Station to Senzu, then take a 40-minute bus from Senzu to Sumatakyo Onsen.

静岡県榛原(はいばら)郡川根本町(かわねほんちょう)にある峡谷。大井川の支流寸又川が曲流しながら下刻(かこく)作用を進めて形成した穿入蛇行(せんにゅうだこう)をもつ峡谷で、寸又川ダムから、大間(おおま)ダム、飛竜(ひりゅう)橋あたりまでをいう。寸又峡温泉のある大間の位置する平坦(へいたん)面は旧河床にあたる。峡谷部は電源開発の歴史も古く、寸又川に沿いダム、発電所が点在する。温泉の引き湯とともに観光化も進み、奥大井県立自然公園に含まれ、森林景観に優れている。JR東海道本線金谷(かなや)駅から千頭(せんず)まで大井川鉄道で、千頭から寸又峡温泉までバスで40分。
