Another name for the Republic of Uzbekistan, located in Central Asia. When the republic was one of the 15 republics that made up the former Soviet Union, it was called the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (Узбекская ССР/Uzbekskaya SSR). Just before the collapse of the Soviet Union (December 1991), the republic declared independence in August 1991, and changed its name to the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekiston Respublikasy, English name: Republic of Uzbekistan, Russian name: Республика Узбекскистан/Respublika Uzbekistan), adopting the traditional regional name. Uzbek refers to the Uzbek people who live in the republic. [Editorial Department] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
